I am an experimental artist trained in a variety of mediums and techniques. I try to create imagery that allows your eye to wander and explore to find something new every time you look at it. I try to take chances with my art and not be afraid to try something completely different or difficult. I am constantly trying to challenge myself and trying to better my skills as an artist.
Growing up in cultural rich Northwestern New Mexico I was submerged in various types of art in several styles and forms. Before I learned about the renaissance painting masters that I would learn about later in life I was was being inspired by the local artisans that created photo realistic paintings that perfectly captured the landscape and nature of the area. The artistry and mastery I could only hope to one day achieve.
When I was in junior high school I entered my first drawing in a public art show. At some point during the show my piece was turned around to face the wall by an anonymous person attending the show. Instead of being discouraged by this reaction I realized I could connect to a person at a much deeper level than just appreciating my work for its aesthetics. I realized my work can have a voice of its own and cause a person to not only look but also react.
I applied for my first artist position in high school at the local t-shirt shop. I was given an assignment which I quickly completed and with my newly acquired computer graphic skills I was an asset. About a week after graduation I received a recommendation to paint a series of murals at the Gallup Public Library. This gave me a lot of publicity including a full page write up in the newspaper and a segment on the local television show. I used this momentum to start my own sign painting business which I continued through college.
In college I continued painting windows and signs that led to other opportunities including dressing windows for department stores and selling ads for the newspaper with all the networking I had made in town. I started air brushing and was able to keep busy painting everything from fraternity t-shirts to car tattoos, clothing, and just about anything else to make money. A crowd watching me airbrush outside my dorm room caught the attention of the editor for the campus newspaper. He offered me a position as the cartoonist on the paper where I would draw political cartoons and a weekly strip until I graduated.
Being creative does not stop once the brush is put down. Having a background as a designer experienced in computer graphics and being trained in many art mediums including airbrush and photography has given me several opportunities to be creative and involved in a variety of unique projects and pieces. Over the years I have designed everything from letterhead to video games and here are a few of my recent projects as well as some favorites that I enjoyed being part of. Some were designed to be able to work as small as a business card to huge murals.
This client wanted a custom wall sculpture to show their love of Arizona but still show they haven't forgot their first love of the ocean. This large wooden sculpture allowed me to show off my carpentry skills as well.
A fun and unique twist on a traditional family portrait with a nostalgic stylized theme
If you can dream it I can help you achieve it. You may be familiar with this movie prop I fabricated for a super fan. It is just for show and does not trap real ghosts.
I am proud to have been asked to donate a logo for, Maddy’s Mission, a non profit organization that helps raise money for local animal sanctuaries.
